HEADLINES

SHILLONG: A fire that broke out at the Shillong Government College of Engineering on the morning of January 15, 2026, originated from a locked sports equipment room located on the upper floor of the building, Principal Prof. C. Marthong has confirmed.

Speaking to the media, Prof. Marthong said the affected room is normally kept locked and opened only when required. He stated that an FIR will be lodged in connection with the incident so that police can conduct a detailed investigation and ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

The principal said the exact reason behind the blaze is still unknown, as the room was locked at the time of the incident. However, an electrical short circuit is being suspected. As a precautionary measure, electricity supply to the college has not been restored yet.

Prof. Marthong said he was informed about the incident around 7:30 am by the college chowkidars. He immediately rushed to the campus. At first, only smoke was visible, and attempts were made to break open the door, but it could not be forced open. Once flames became visible, staff avoided going near the room due to safety concerns, following which fire tenders were called in to control the blaze.

Fire and emergency services later managed to douse the flames, preventing further spread. No injuries have been reported, but the sports equipment stored in the room is believed to have been damaged. Further assessment of losses is awaited.
