FIR filed against CM, others over alleged illegal Pattas distribution in Danakgre Akhing

Shillong: A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Arimile Police Outpost in Tura accusing several senior officials, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, of illegally distributing land pattas in Danakgre Akhing of West Garo Hills while the matter is pending before the High Court.

The FIR was lodged by Amanche Ch. Marak along with his mother, Enilla Ch. Marak, the Akhing Nokma of Danakgre, seeking immediate registration of a case and legal action against those allegedly involved in what they termed an unlawful settlement of land. According to the complaint, the issue is already under judicial scrutiny after a petition was filed before the High Court of Meghalaya in Shillong in 2025 challenging the government’s move to classify certain areas in Danakgre Akhing as Government (GAD) land.

Despite the case being sub judice, the complainants alleged that earlier this year a list containing residents’ names, plot numbers, land classifications and land rates was circulated in connection with the disputed land.

The FIR further stated that on February 11, 2026, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma personally distributed pattas to residents at Nikwatgre locality, which falls under Danakgre Akhing. The complainants claimed that the pattas were issued upon payment of substantial amounts even though the legality of the land classification remains pending before the court.

The petitioners contend that the distribution of pattas during an ongoing court proceeding violates the constitutional rights of traditional heads recognized under the Sixth Schedule and amounts to contempt of court as well as infringement of customary land rights.

In the FIR, the complainants have sought registration of a case against Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Charming N. Sangma, J.D. Sangma, Chairman of the Tura Municipal Board, the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills and other officials involved in initiating the patta distribution in Danakgre Akhing.

They have urged the police to register the case and initiate legal proceedings under appropriate sections of law against the individuals named in the complaint.
