Eight Dorbar Shnongs and KSU Laban Ban Renting of Houses to Non-Tribes Without Village Permission

HEADLINES

Shillong: In a significant resolution, eight Dorbar Shnongs under Laban area, along with the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle, have unanimously decided to prohibit non-tribal individuals from renting houses within their jurisdictions without prior approval from the village authorities.

The special meeting, convened by KSU Laban Circle, was attended by Rangbah Shnong, secretaries, and executive members of Dorbar Shnong Madan & Riat Laban, Laban, Lawsohtun, Upper Lumparing, Lower Lumparing, K.O.R, Kynjat Phutbot, and Lumshatsngi. Officials from Laban Police Station and Rilbong Beat House were also present.

The resolution covers not just tenants but also extends to outsiders staying in guest houses, shops, and workplaces, including migrant labourers. Homeowners, shopkeepers, guest house owners, and contractors are bound to comply with this resolution, failing which action will be taken by the Dorbar Shnong, with cases reported to the Union or police if required.

The meeting further stressed the need to circulate this decision widely through public announcements. Villages have been instructed to strictly verify documents before registering new residents, ensuring that only those with proper papers—especially EPIC from Meghalaya—are recognised as genuine residents.

The Dorbar Shnongs resolved to evict illegal settlers if found and take necessary steps, including police involvement, to maintain order.
