Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who oversees the Home (Police) Department, has directed the Superintendent of Police (East Khasi Hills) and the SP (City) to bolster police presence and ensure public safety following a surge in thefts and break-ins across Shillong.
Addressing concerns over rising crime, Tynsong revealed that the government has instructed the police to intensify their efforts in vulnerable areas across the city. He attributed the increase in thefts to the growing number of drug users who resort to criminal activities.
Tynsong emphasized the urgency of enhancing security measures, particularly during the festive season, to restore confidence among residents.
Shillong has witnessed a spate of thefts in recent months, including vehicle break-ins, home burglaries, and even incidents at places of worship. These crimes have heightened public anxiety, with many residents feeling unsafe in their neighborhoods.
Despite repeated incidents, the East Khasi Hills Police have refrained from disclosing details of ongoing investigations, while theft cases continue unabated.
