Demand for separate Cadre and Khasi–Jaintia State gains momentum: HSPDP

HEADLINES

Shillong: HSPDP President KP Pangiang has reiterated that the party’s demand for a separate cadre for Meghalaya officers (free from the Assam joint cadre) is an issue the party has consistently pursued, just as firmly as its long-standing opposition to uranium mining.

The HSPDP has, for years, maintained that Meghalaya must have its own civil service cadre rather than remaining tied to Assam. Pangiang said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has been actively following up the matter with the Government of India and the party appreciates his commitment to an issue it has repeatedly raised.

On the demand for a separate Khasi–Jaintia State, Pangiang said this too has always been a priority for the party, alongside the Garo National Council’s (GNC) demand for a separate Garoland.

He informed that a delegation would soon stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to pressure the Centre to fulfil the long-pending demand.

At the same time, Pangiang announced that the HSPDP will not contest either MLA or MDC elections in Garo Hills, stating that the party’s ideological foundation remains focused solely on advocating for a separate state.
