Tura: The District Administration of West Garo Hills has imposed a curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 in view of the prevailing law and order situation linked to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Election 2026.
The order was issued by Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, District Magistrate of West Garo Hills, and will remain in force from 12:00 AM on March 10, 2026, to 12:00 AM on March 11, 2026 across the entire district.
The curfew was imposed following concerns over tensions surrounding the participation of non-tribals in the upcoming GHADC election, which authorities fear could lead to disruptions of normal life and potential breaches of peace.
Under the order, the following activities are strictly prohibited:
Obstruction of movement of vehicles
Carrying or concealing weapons such as lathis, sticks, stones, firearms or other lethal items
Obstructing the legal functioning of shops, establishments or offices
Unlawful assembly of five or more persons intended to cause disruption
The administration warned that any violation of the order will attract penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant legal provisions.
Officials said the order has been issued ex-parte due to the urgent nature of the situation and will remain effective until further instructions from the district administration.
Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and maintain peace during the period.
