Tensions erupted in Mawkynrew Village under Madanrting Police Station in East Khasi Hills District on Monday, leading to violent clashes between local residents and law enforcement agencies.
The unrest stemmed from a protest against the allocation of land to the Ramakrishna Mission for the construction of a school, a move that many locals opposed.
Residents from Mawleiñ and Mawkynrew, including men and women, gathered in large numbers to voice their discontent. They claimed the disputed land had already been handed over to the Mawkynrew Sports Club for use as a playground and accused the authorities of making the decision without consulting the community.
The protesters attempted to forcefully enter the construction site, they were met by the police and a magistrate. The situation quickly escalated, leading to violent clashes.
Police resorted to lathi charges and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. However, the protesters stood their ground, resulting in injuries on both sides. Reports indicate that 5 to 6 individuals, including a woman, as well as some police personnel, sustained injuries during the confrontation.
In light of the deteriorating situation, District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah, IAS, imposed a curfew only in Mawkynrew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The curfew, effective immediately, aims to restore law and order and will remain in place until further notice.
The residents have also demanded the removal of G Dhar, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Mawkynrew C&RD Block, accusing him of being involved in the controversial land allocation.
The district administration has urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with efforts to restore normalcy in the area.
