Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday expressed his personal perspective on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stressing the complexity of implementing it in a diverse country like India.

“It (UCC) is not something that will go easily for a country like India… What I am saying is, the UCC in general, if you look at it as a thought process and as an idea for a diverse country like India, looks difficult,” said Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while answering a question put up whether the government of Meghalaya will come up with a resolution to oppose the implementation of the UCC in Meghalaya.

When asked if Meghalaya will take steps like other States Legislative Assembly in passing a resolution ỉn opposing the UCC to implement in their respective states, Chief Minister refrained from making any comments until he had the chance to review the official Bill. He emphasized that it would be challenging for the government to object to something based on “assumptions”.

He further added, “What if the UCC states that our lineage should be from the women’s side, I think Meghalaya will be the first one to accept it”.

It maybe mentioned, Kerala has become the first state to passed a resolution by the Legislative Assembly ỉn opposing the implementation of the UCC, other states including Mizoram and Nagaland has also stand firm to opposed the implementation of the UCC.
