Cannot Remove VC Simply Based on Demands, Says Union Minister

HEADLINES

Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, has stated that universities operate with autonomous powers under the law, and the removal of a Vice-Chancellor (VC) cannot be done arbitrarily just because there are demands for it.

Addressing the media today, Majumdar explained that specific procedures govern the appointment and removal of a VC, and any action must adhere to those regulations.

His remarks come amid ongoing protests by NEHU students, who have been demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shukla Shankar. He assured that the Government of India is closely monitoring the situation at NEHU and is taking steps to address students’ grievances.

“The students are the most important stakeholders in any educational institution. We hope to resolve their concerns through appropriate measures,” Majumdar added.
