The Meghalaya state Cabinet approved significant changes on Friday, introducing revised minimum wages and enhanced cess collection that will benefit over 85,000 labourers across the state.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described the decision as a major move for the welfare of labourers. Under the revised wage structure, highly skilled labourers will now earn ₹645, up from ₹586, skilled workers will receive ₹605 (up from ₹530), semi-skilled workers ₹565 (from ₹474), and unskilled workers ₹525 (from ₹419).
The Chief Minister stressed that all organizations must implement these revised wages. He also urged the public to report any non-compliance to the Labour Department for necessary action.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved amendments to the Meghalaya Buildings and Other Construction Workers Regulation and Employment Condition Rules, 2008. As part of the changes, the state will continue to collect a cess from which registered labourers will benefit. With approximately 80,000 to 85,000 registered workers, the scheme provides various benefits, including medical assistance, disability payments, and support for the education of workers’ children.
Sangma confirmed that the amendments would result in higher benefits for these registered labourers, ensuring improved support for their families.
