Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun voiced concerns in the Assembly today, stating that the people of Byrnihat are deeply apprehensive about industrial projects in their area. He remarked that residents feel anxious the moment they hear the word ‘industry’, given past experiences of pollution and environmental degradation.
Participating in the discussion on the government’s plan to relocate the Conservation Training Institute (CTI) from Byrnihat for industrial development, Sohtun highlighted the negative environmental impact of unchecked industrialization. He pointed out that a school in the area has repeatedly complained about sewage overflow and waterlogging caused by industrial activities.
He further warned that deforestation due to industrial expansion is worsening conditions, affecting land, rivers, and air quality.
Sohtun suggested that the government should first consult with the local population before proceeding with such projects. He also proposed that the government consider shifting the project to an alternative site, as some landowners have reportedly expressed willingness to donate land for development elsewhere.
