Boy Escapes Kidnapping Attempt in Ri-Bhoi, Found Tied and Covered with Banana Leaves

HEADLINES

Ri-Bhoi District witnessed yet another shocking crime as a nine-year-old boy narrowly escaped an attempted kidnapping near Bir village on the road to Mawrong. The incident, which has spread fear among residents, ended with the child being rescued following the quick response of his mother, family members, and village authorities.

According to the mother, she had sent her son around 4:30 pm to collect pork from his aunt’s house. When he failed to return, she began searching and calling for him but received no reply. Alarmed, she immediately informed her husband, relatives, and the village authorities, who launched a search operation.

Initially, searchers found a basket meant for carrying pork, which led them into the nearby forest. Around 6:20 pm, the boy was discovered about 200 meters away from the village, lying unconscious with his hands and legs tied and his body covered with banana leaves, leaving only his face partly visible for breathing.

The boy was rushed to CHC Umsning, where doctors confirmed he had sustained minor injuries to his legs, apparently caused by his abductors during the struggle.

A villager who first spotted him said he was shocked to find the child lying motionless, arranged as though he were asleep, with his body completely concealed under banana leaves.

The incident has triggered fresh concerns over rising crimes in Meghalaya and the safety of children, with villagers demanding strict action against those responsible.
