ATM loot accused produced in Court, sent to four-day police custody

Shillong: Police on Monday produced the accused persons arrested in connection with a series of ATM loot cases before a court, which remanded them to four days of police custody for further investigation.

Earlier in the day, the accused were taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for medical examination to determine their health condition before being produced in court.

Those arrested in connection with the ATM theft cases include Salim from Dorakhi in Mewat, Haryana; Rahul from Bazidpur in Nuh district; John Fishal Lyngkhoi from Umpling in Shillong; Joyous Dura from Mawlai Nongkwar; and Rejaul Korim and Lius Ali from Assam.

As part of the investigation, police on Sunday night also took the accused to the ATM booth at Mylliem, where they allegedly demonstrated how the robbery was carried out. The reconstruction of the crime scene was conducted to help investigators gather further evidence and strengthen the case.

Police said the accused are suspected to be involved in multiple ATM loot incidents in the region. An ATM at Mawkriah was looted on May 21, 2025, while another at Smit was targeted on December 30, 2025, from where ₹28,13,100 was stolen. In another incident at Mylliem on February 8, 2026, the accused allegedly looted ₹35,57,000.

Investigators said the total amount stolen in these incidents is estimated to be around ₹1 crore. Police added that the accused will remain in police custody for four days as the investigation continues.
