Shillong, September 12: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly today rejected the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming (Repealing) Bill, 2022 presented by the KHNAM MLA from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum.
In presenting the Bill to repeal the Gaming Act of the Government, Adelbert Nongrum said that the opinions of the religious leaders, local traditional heads, civil society and also the people should be heard and respected.
He questioned which is more important to the Government, raising the tax collection from gambling or listening and respecting the feelings of the people of the State, and not to dilute the Meghalaya of Prevention of Gambling Act,1970.
The Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh sought for the approval of all MLAs present via a voice vote in which ‘no’ resonated louder and thereby rejecting the Bill presented by the MLA of KHNAM, and the Speaker announced that the Bill has been rejected by the Assembly.
