Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said the situation along the Assam–Meghalaya border, particularly in the Maikhuli area, has shown significant improvement following coordinated efforts by both states.
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said regional committees comprising representatives from Assam and Meghalaya were constituted to address border-related issues, which has led to visible positive changes on the ground.
He informed that residents from Assam had earlier objected to the erection of electric poles in the Maikhuli area. However, the issue was resolved after the deputy commissioners of both states held discussions and a peace committee involving local villagers was formed. As a result, the project has now been allowed to proceed.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the situation in Rajabala is currently calm and under control. He added that a peace committee has been constituted in the area to maintain harmony and prevent any escalation.
Tynsong further stated that more than six people have been arrested in connection with recent incidents and assured that the law will take its course.
