The All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) on Monday has decided to temporarily end its strike following the State Government’s assurance to address their demand for a salary increase.
The teachers had been protesting at Malki Ground since March 1, with the strike lasting 21 days, seeking a 100% salary hike for 13,000 SSA teachers.
AMSSASTA President, Peter Thyrniang announced the decision to call off the strike after a meeting with Minister of State and government spokesperson, Ampareen Lyngdoh. Thyrniang stated that as communicated by Lyngdoh during the meeting, the government had approved the teachers’ demands.
However, the formal announcement of the salary hike has been delayed due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the upcoming by-election in Gambegre constituency.
According to the State Education Department, implementing the salary increase will require an additional expenditure of ₹300 crore from the state government.
