SHILLONG: All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader in charge of Meghalaya, Dr. A. Chellakumar, has come down heavily on the NPP-led government, accusing it of failing to contain the alarming rise of HIV infections and drug abuse in the state.
Speaking in Shillong on Wednesday, Dr. Chellakumar claimed that HIV cases in Meghalaya have surged by over 10 percent under the present government, describing the situation as “deeply alarming.”
He alleged that instead of controlling the drug menace, the NPP government has joined hands with the drug mafia, allowing the problem to spread unchecked.
The Congress leader further accused the government of misusing public funds meant for welfare and development and even “buying” MLAs with taxpayers’ money.
Dr. Chellakumar also made it clear that the Congress has no regrets over the defection of certain MLAs, saying the party’s strength lies not in individuals but in the people. “The Congress does not buy people, unlike other political parties,” he asserted.
During the same event, former Rangsakona MLA Zenith M. Sangma formally rejoined the Congress. His return was warmly welcomed by the party, along with Plostar Syiem from Nongpoh and several other leaders who also came back to the fold.
