SHILLONG, February 03: The leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pynshngain N.Syiem said that the MDCs are yet undecided about contesting for the Chairman seat in KHADC.

The Chairman seat in the KHADC has been left vacant after Pyniaid S.Syiem resigned as Chairman and the Governor of Meghalaya has directed that a Special Session be called on Monday, the 7th of February to elect a new Chairman and the filing of nominations for the said election is slated for the 4th of February. The ruling side in the KHADC, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has approved the name of NPP MDC from Mawphlang, Lamphrang Blah for the Chairman seat.

The leader of the opposition in the KHADC has expressed concern over the call to hold a Special Session on the 7th of February which is not as per the AD Rules 32(2), in which it is stated that if the Chairman seat falls vacant, the filing of nominations for the seat is to be called one day prior to the election. He said that this is a breach of the provisions laid down by the District Council Affairs Department of the Government and the office of the Governor ought to have followed the provisions as per the AD Rules so as to avoid any conflict of interest.

P.N Syiem also stated that there is no hurry in holding a Special Session for the election of a new Chairman as the Budget Session of the Council is slated to begin on the 8th of March while adding that it is not an urgent matter that requires a Special Session as the Deputy Chairman is there to conduct the affairs for the Session.
