Meghalaya Puts Foreign Tours of Ministers, MLAs and Officials on Hold for Six Months

HEADLINES

The Government of Meghalaya has announced a six-month suspension of all state-funded foreign travel for State Ministers, MLAs, and government officers. The measure aims to reduce official expenditure and safeguard public resources.

This decision is in line with similar measures adopted by governments across the country to ensure the long-term sustainability of financial resources. Ongoing global developments and geopolitical tensions have also posed challenges related to foreign exchange and international travel. The Government of Meghalaya views this step as a prudent measure to conserve resources for essential developmental priorities.

As a result, eight foreign study tours and exposure visits involving approximately 63–68 officers and representatives from various sectors have been put on hold. These programmes were related to governance, livestock development, climate-resilient water management, healthcare, project implementation, nature conservation, and election management systems.

The proposed visits included destinations such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Argentina.

The Government has clarified that the suspension of foreign travel will not affect national relationships or the exchange of knowledge between countries. Rather, the temporary measure reflects a focused commitment to governance priorities within the State. Many of the learning opportunities and collaborations will continue through online platforms, technological partnerships, and future initiatives once the suspension is lifted.

The Government’s notification further specifies that the suspension does not apply to foreign travel that is fully funded by the Government of India or by Multilateral Development Banks. However, such travel will continue to require approval from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
