Conrad K. Sangma on Monday flagged off five electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility and modern public transportation in Shillong.
The programme was held at Taraghar-State Guest House, where the Chief Minister launched the first batch of electric buses aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving public transport services and easing traffic congestion in the city.
The newly introduced buses are fully air-conditioned, zero-emission vehicles capable of travelling between 180 and 200 kilometres on a single charge. Each bus can accommodate 25 passengers and includes modern features such as wheelchair access, foldable ramps, overhead storage and an e-ticketing system.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve Shillong’s transportation network and encourage more people to shift from private vehicles to public transport.
He noted that congestion remains one of Shillong’s biggest challenges and said the government is pursuing a combination of solutions, including improved public transportation, new parking infrastructure and the development of the upcoming administrative city at Mawdiangdiang.
The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to electric mobility and announced that incentives for electric vehicles, including exemptions on registration fees and road taxes, would continue after the policy receives fresh Cabinet approval.
Sangma encouraged citizens to adopt electric vehicles, saying they are well suited to Meghalaya’s hilly terrain and can be conveniently charged at home.
Earlier, Vijay Kumar D informed that Shillong has been sanctioned 50 electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme.
He said the buses will operate under a Gross Cost Contract model, where operators are paid based on service standards rather than passenger fares, ensuring reliable and timely service.
According to Vijay Kumar D, four major routes have already been identified for the electric buses. He added that within six months Shillong is expected to have a combined fleet of around 150 diesel and electric buses serving approximately 60,000 commuters daily.
The programme was attended by Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed, senior government officials and representatives of various implementing agencies.
