Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for four major road infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹488 crore in East and West Jaintia Hills, aimed at improving regional connectivity, boosting tourism, and strengthening economic growth. Also present at the programme were Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, MLAs Santa Mary Shylla and Kyrmen Shylla, officials from the PWD and district administration, and local community leaders
The projects, inaugurated at Latyrke Playground and Lumshyrmit Village in East Jaintia Hills, will cover a combined road length of 108.24 kilometres. The largest project under the World Bank-funded Meghalaya Logistics & Connectivity Improvement Project (MLCIP) involves the upgradation of the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Pala–Semmasi road stretch at a cost of ₹355 crore.
Other projects include the strengthening of the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Moulsei–Haflong Road, the approach road to Chympe Waterfalls along with the Sutnga–Khaddum Road, and the Shkemtalang (NH-206) to Lumshyrmit Road with a major bridge over the Myntdu River connecting NH-6 at Kongong.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said the projects would enhance access to healthcare, education, tourism, and markets while creating long-term economic opportunities for local communities. He announced that tenders for the projects had already been floated and work is expected to begin within 45 days.
The Chief Minister also spoke about the government’s efforts to resume coal mining through scientific and sustainable practices while balancing environmental concerns and the needs of local miners. He further announced support for the construction of an indoor stadium at Latyrke Village.
