Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma, is attending the 16th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar being held in Ottawa from May 25 to 29, 2026.
Organised by the Parliament of Canada, the seminar is themed “Parliaments in the 21st Century: Innovation and Adaptation for Democracy.” Parliamentary leaders and officials from different regions are participating to discuss modern democratic challenges and evolving legislative practices.
The seminar will cover several important topics, including the Canadian parliamentary system, the role of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), youth participation in democracy, women’s political leadership, parliamentary infrastructure, government accountability, electronic voting, hybrid proceedings in the House of Commons, and the future role of artificial intelligence in parliaments.
The Meghalaya delegation also includes Shri Malthus S. Sangma, Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and Shri Raja K. Kharpuri, Deputy Secretary.
Officials stated that the participation is expected to provide valuable exposure to global parliamentary innovations and strengthen democratic governance and legislative functioning in Meghalaya.
