Shillong, May 26: The Committee on Government Assurances of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday inspected key infrastructure projects, including the Indoor Stadium at Umsawli, the under-construction Mawkhanu Football Stadium in East Khasi Hills, and the Water Sports Facilities at Umtham in Ri-Bhoi district.
The delegation was led by MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar along with MLAs Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, and Ollan Singh Suin. Officials from the Sports Department and project contractors were also present during the inspection.
Speaking to reporters, Tongkhar expressed pride over the construction of what he described as India’s largest football stadium in Meghalaya. He credited Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for initiating the ambitious project and said the committee was satisfied with the pace of work.
The 40,000-seater football-specific stadium at Mawkhanu, estimated at Rs 732 crore, is expected to be completed by late 2028 under the execution of KPC Projects Limited. The project forms part of the state government’s plan to position Meghalaya as a major football hub in India.
The committee also reviewed progress at the Water Sports Centre in Umtham and the tennis court at Umsawli. Tongkhar praised the rapid infrastructure growth in New Shillong, especially road connectivity, and expressed hope that all ongoing projects would be completed on schedule for public use.
Umtham is being developed into a major whitewater adventure destination, with a Rs 21 crore canoe slalom course planned to promote training and adventure tourism in the state.
