Shillong: A viral video circulating on social media has sparked outrage after a man whose identity has not been confirmed yet, was seen allegedly impersonating a police officer and assaulting a local driver.

In the footage, the man is seen threatening the driver, claiming he would shoot him with a “pistol,” while also physically assaulting him by punching and slapping. He is further heard warning the driver of being put behind bars, creating the impression that he was acting in an official capacity.

While the exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, the video suggests an apparent misuse of perceived influence.

Clarifying the matter, Superintendent of Police East Khasi Hills Police, Vivek Syiem confirmed that the individual in the video is not a police officer but a civilian.

“Following a video which has widely circulated on social media where one person was seen assaulting and threatening a driver, and where many have alleged that the person is a policeman, an enquiry was made. It has been ascertained that the person in the video is not a policeman but a civilian,” the police stated.

Authorities further informed that a suo moto case has been registered, and legal action will be taken as per law.

Reaffirming their stance, the East Khasi Hills Police stated that they remain committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the protection of citizens, while also maintaining discipline within the force.
