Shillong: Just minutes before the start of the special session convened to remove him, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, Albinush R. Marak, resigned from his post on his own accord.

Marak submitted his resignation letter to the Chairman of the GHADC, stating that he was stepping down while taking responsibility for losing the confidence of the Members of the District Council (MDCs) to continue as the leader of the Council. His decision came after he learnt that as many as 21 MDCs had moved a motion of no confidence against him.

Earlier, on March 14, the C. H. Vijayashankar, the Governor of Meghalaya, had issued a notification directing that a special session be convened on March 16 after receiving a requisition signed by 21 MDCs of the GHADC expressing their loss of confidence in Marak’s leadership.

It may be mentioned that Marak is an MDC from the Siju constituency representing the National People’s Party (India). However, despite being the sitting CEM, he was denied a party ticket by the NPP for the upcoming GHADC elections scheduled to be held in April.
