Police in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, have seized camouflage uniforms and live ammunition discovered inside the premises of a mosque, officials said on Friday.
According to a press release issued by S. A. Rynjah, Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills, local residents informed the district police on the morning of March 13 about camouflage clothing and ammunition found within the mosque compound.
During the inquiry, police learnt that a personnel from the District Executive Force (DEF) of East Garo Hills had been residing in rented accommodation inside the mosque compound. The officer, who is currently on sanctioned leave, had reportedly left behind personal belongings including police uniforms with name plate, belt, boots, camouflage uniforms and an ammunition pouch.
Officials said four live rounds of ammunition were also found among the items. Since keeping ammunition at a private location instead of depositing it in the armoury during leave is unauthorized, the items were seized.
A case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station as PS Case No. 07/2026 under Section 25(1-A) of the Arms Act to initiate legal action against the personnel involved.
Police also appealed to the public not to spread false or misleading information about the incident on social media, warning that any attempt to circulate misinformation with malicious intent will attract strict legal action
