CRPF and Army Deployed in West Garo Hills

HEADLINES

Shillong, March 10: Security forces including the Central Reserve Police Force and the Indian Army have been deployed in West Garo Hills as tension continues in the region following clashes linked to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Election 2026.

Officials said the situation in the district has not fully stabilised despite the imposition of curfew and the deployment of additional security forces.

According to Cyril V Diengdoh, the district administration has extended the curfew for March 11 and 12, while additional security personnel have been sent to sensitive areas to prevent further violence.

CRPF personnel have already arrived in Tura and have been deployed in areas affected by unrest. Meanwhile, the Indian Army conducted flag marches in several locations including Chibinang and Rajabala to reassure residents and restore confidence among the public.

The state government has also directed Deputy Commissioners across the region to hold meetings with church leaders, village heads and peace committees to help ease tensions and promote dialogue.

Officials confirmed that the unrest has disrupted the filing of nominations for MDC candidates in West Garo Hills, though the process continued normally in other districts.

When asked about demands from some groups to postpone the GHADC elections, the official said the polls will proceed as scheduled, while the government continues to closely monitor the situation.

Authorities confirmed that two people have died in the clashes so far, while further details regarding arrests and injuries are awaited from district officials.
