Shillong, Nov 19 — Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the Ramakrishna Mission College at Sohra, the first college of the Ramakrishna Mission in the North East, affiliated to Captain Williamson Sangma State University. Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem and Swami Achyuteshananda, Trustee of Ramakrishna Math & Mission, were present at the ceremony.
In his address, the Chief Minister said that compassion, education and livelihood are among the noblest pursuits, and praised the Ramakrishna Mission for its commitment to holistic education. He said the Mission nurtures children to become humble, patriotic, God-fearing citizens with values of discipline, hard work and empathy, adding that the greatest investment any society can make is in human capital.
Sangma acknowledged that, despite education being a top priority, the sector faces deep-rooted structural challenges that have made it complex and difficult to reform. He said the government has begun a process of streamlining and rationalising schools, which will gradually improve the overall quality of education in the state.
He stressed that students must remain at the centre of all decisions. “Let the student be the guiding force in all our decisions, not just what is good for teachers, schools or managing committees, but what is right and good for the student,” he said.
The Chief Minister assured that issues of road connectivity, electricity and water affecting Ramakrishna Mission institutions would be examined and addressed on a case-by-case basis. He thanked the Mission for its long-standing contribution to education and vocational training and pledged continued collaboration.
The programme also featured cultural performances by students, and the Chief Minister felicitated members of the school alumni.
