Shillong, Oct 19: In a sombre show of community solidarity, the Jaiaw Pyllun youth organisation held a candlelight vigil at the Community Hall–cum–Sports Complex in Lumpyllon today to mourn the recent, tragic deaths of two children and to press for stronger safety measures.
The event drew residents, members of local youth and women’s groups, bereaved families and officials, including North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, who urged the state government and police to take swift action to curb rising incidents that threaten public safety. Organisers called for the installation of CCTV cameras at key locations, tighter law enforcement and coordinated community policing to deter crime and restore public confidence.
Speakers stressed that the vigil was both a tribute to the young lives lost and a warning that the community will not remain silent. They appealed for faster investigations, improved night patrols, and preventive steps to protect children and vulnerable residents.
