Shillong: Meghalaya Labour Minister Shakliar Warjri has issued a stern warning against individuals allegedly involved in illegally providing work licences to migrant labourers in the state.
Speaking to the press, Warjri revealed that inputs from recent inspections conducted by pressure groups suggested that certain people have been issuing licences or granting permissions to migrant workers without legal sanction. Following an internal review meeting with officials, the Minister clarified that the Labour Department has not authorised any such licences, raising suspicions that some individuals may have taken advantage of the system.
Warjri said he has instructed his department to file cases against those found guilty of such unlawful acts, stressing that they must be arrested and held accountable. He made it clear that the department would not compromise on the safety and security of the state.
The Minister further informed that in recent months, he had directed Labour Inspectors to conduct field inspections at sites where migrant workers are engaged, ensuring tighter monitoring and regulation.
