22 children return from Karnataka, to be enrolled in schools in Meghalaya

HEADLINES

Shillong: A group of 22 children originally from Meghalaya arrived in Shillong on Wednesday from Karnataka, following the intervention of the state’s Social Welfare Department.

The children were formally received at the office of the Social Welfare Department in the presence of Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Director Camelia Doreen Lyngwa, and other officials.

Speaking to the media, Minister Paul Lyngdoh said that the children were brought back in accordance with legal procedures. He mentioned that the Social Welfare Department is working closely with the Education Department to facilitate the children’s admission into schools in Meghalaya, allowing them to continue their education, which was interrupted midway in Karnataka.

He further explained that the children had gone to Karnataka after an arrangement was made between their parents and an organisation based in Jowai. The matter came to the government’s attention only after a food poisoning incident occurred there, which resulted in the death of two children, prompting the authorities to take action.
