Elephants Wreak Havoc Again on Farmers’ Crops in Ranikor

HEADLINES

Farmers in Ranikor are once again facing challenges as wild elephants have destroyed homes and crops in the area on the night of September 28, 2024. The elephants have caused significant damage to crops such as betel nut trees, orange trees, and other valuable plants.

The Ranikor Area Farmers Association (RAFA) has been raising concerns with authorities for years, including the Wildlife Department and the Deputy Commissioner’s office in South West Khasi Hills District. However, the response has been limited to mere promises with no effective action, said farmer leaders Michael Lyngdoh and Kyrmen K. Rja.

Despite frequent visits by wildlife officials who promised support, farmers have yet to receive any meaningful assistance. Last year, RAFA organized meetings where a resolution was passed to cull the elephants, but officials intervened, asking farmers to reconsider and promising action, which once again resulted in no concrete outcome.

What has particularly upset the farmers is the Chief Minister’s statement during an Assembly session, after local MLA Pius Marweiñ raised the issue. The CM suggested that humans and wildlife should coexist, prompting outrage among farmers who feel their concerns are being dismissed.

RAFA has now called on the Chief Minister to personally visit the affected areas and experience the hardships firsthand. The group also hinted at organizing tougher actions if the situation remains unresolved, as the ongoing destruction has left many farmers in tears, struggling to protect their homes and livelihoods.
