SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong informed the Assembly on Tuesday that 658 Bangladeshi nationals have been detected and prosecuted in the state since 2021, of whom 194 were deported after completing their sentences.
Replying to a call-attention notice, Tynsong said the government has put in place a comprehensive, multi-layered anti-infiltration mechanism to curb illegal migration. As part of the measures, 18 anti-infiltration check posts, gates and a land customs station have been set up at key locations along the inter-state and Indo-Bangladesh border.
He said the system is supported by Anti-Infiltration Special Squads operating in all districts, which regularly conduct coordinated drives, surprise naka checks and patrols in vulnerable areas in collaboration with the Labour Department, Village Defence Parties and local authorities.
In addition, 11 District Task Forces have been constituted to strengthen detection and deportation processes, while a state-level monitoring committee oversees the identification and repatriation of overstaying foreign nationals.
According to the Deputy Chief Minister, sustained enforcement efforts since 2021 have led to significant detections and legal action, resulting in the prosecution of 658 Bangladeshi nationals and the deportation of 194 individuals after completion of legal formalities and issuance of travel permits by the Bangladesh authorities.
