The HYC, Mawiong Unit on the 7th of February under the leadership of it’s Secretary, D.Iawphniaw and Vice President, J.Sohtun caught 15 undocumented non-tribal labourers arriving at the State from West Bengal and Assam with the intention to engage as labourers in Mawdiangdiang area, Shillong.
It was informed that the undocumented non-tribal labourers arrived on a Night Super Bus in the morning and while preparing to board unto 3 other taxis which had been waiting for their arrival, the local residents on noticing something unusual about the whole conduct of the labourers, immediately informed the HYC, and when the HYC rushed to the spot, they caught these undocumented non-tribal labourers at a location opposite to Rymbai Filling Station.
In the search conducted by the HYC, the labourers were found to have not possessed any work permit, Covid negative report and police verification or any other documents that would certify them as labourers intending to engage in labour in the State while they also found fraudulently made EPIC cards,
Aadhar and Pan cards from them. Further the HYC also found that these persons had come to the state with the help of one non-tribal contractor of NEIGRIHMS and they paid ₹500 per person at the Corona Centre(Covid Check Gate) in Umling to avoid testing and to easily pass through the Infiltration Check Gate in Byrnihat.
The organisation has expressed that the Covid Check Gate in Umling has become a fund collection centre for someone and is no longer a testing centre for visitors from outside the state.
The organisation has sternly warned and expressed that it will continue to remind the non-tribal and local contractors as well to not take undue advantage but to bring in a sense of security by employing local labourers as the obstinate attitude of the contractors will bring problems in all aspects of employment for all the citizens of the state as a whole and what is most dangerous especially as a result of this attitude of theirs is the uncertainty that from amongst the undocumented non-tribal labourers, some may have been involved in criminal activities in their native or other states and have now come to hide and shelter themselves in the State.
